WHAT ARE AU CHARACTERS?
[/i], shorthand for 'Alternate Universe', refers to characters
not from the Slayers series
or original characters of members' own creation, but characters from other media (anime, manga, comic books, tv shows, novels, etc...) that members wish to roleplay as on
Set Me Free. These are not characters
native to the Slayers universe in any way, but as AU characters they are essentially remade as though they'd been born into the world of Slayers instead of their own.[/ul]
DO I HAVE TO APPLY FOR AN AU CHARACTER?
[/i] they are treated like regular characters. The only significant difference is that the veteran / staff member reviewing an AU character will be looking more closely at the character's traits, abilities, equipment, and backstory to make sure that everything lines up with established Slayers canon.
For convenience when reviewing, please put [AU] in the thread subject when posting an AU character.[/ul]
HOW DO I MAKE A CHARACTER 'AU'?
[/i] as from their original fiction -- they can have the same interests, personality, demeanor, etc., -- but must be written as if they were born into the Slayers world instead of their original one. This means that certain characteristics, such as race, history, traits, abilities, and equipment would
not be the same as in their original story. For example, an AU Luke Skywalker would not have Force powers and a lightsaber but might, instead, be a talented mystical swordsman like Zelgadis; an AU Naruto would probably rely on shamanism magic (and actual stealth,
hint hint) instead of chakra; an AU Doctor Who... is particularly challenging, come to think of it. Oh my.
It's important to note that, when making an AU character, you should
as much as possible revise them to fit the Slayers world,
NOT add to the Slayers world to fit them. This is
especially true where abilities and powers are concerned -- don't simply copy-paste a character's supernatural abilities into the Slayers world
unless the tone and style of magic in Slayers
does in fact support such powers. Attempts to get around this expectation will be gravely frowned upon.
As a suggestion, it's best to start with an AU character's backstory first, then work on traits and abilities afterwards. And please try to avoid importing whole locations into the Slayers world -- while there is definite room for new and unique locations on the map, directly borrowing whole-cloth from another fictional world shows a distinct lack of imagination. Instead, play with the 'what if's -- what if Luke was raised in Seyruun, what if Naruto were trained to be a knight instead of a ninja, what if the Doctor
didn't have a magic blue phone box? Let your creativity flow freely and experiment with the possibilities.[/ul]
