Here at Set Me Free, we like the idea of a community that's light on rules and big on fun and adventure! Still, there are a few that simply can't be done without, just to lay the groundwork for everything to go well.
[li][Rule #1: TOS]
All Proboards Terms of Service apply and supersede any rules established by the Admin Council or by community vote. This rule is unchangeable. Please familiarize yourself with the TOS before posting on Set Me Free.
[/li][li][Rule #2: FUN!]
The point of a hobby is to do something you enjoy or, barring that, something you strongly believe in. Set Me Free seeks to encourage the creative energies of its members and not restrict imagination; thus, this is a forum where almost ANYTHING you want to do can be done (within reason and the restrictions of the Slayers mythos). Want to be a master of magic, having unique spells that you created yourself? How about be lord or lady over a kingdom and lead its armies into battle? Maybe even make a deal with the Mazoku and achieve immortality? All that and more is possible here!
Oh, and we encourage roleplaying too.
On Set Me Free, virtually everything RP-related is accessible to members who've proven themselves capable roleplayers and good members of the community. We have a simple three-tiered progression of ranks that open up more and more options to active members in good standing -- no complex system of promotions and evaluations here, you simply buy these ranks with your well-earned Adventure Points (AP). You're here for adventure, and by Ceiphied, we're gonna give it to ya!
[/li][li][Rule #3: Community]
Set Me Free is a forum that realizes that roleplaying is about the roleplayers, about everyone who contributes and makes this a great place to write, chat, and have fun. So we've given the community an unparalleled level of freedom. Using the Community Discussion section, members can make suggestions, propose new rules, change rules, or remove rules, and bring pretty much any issue to the table. This includes the promotion of senior or veteran members to staff members, which is a temporary stepping stone up to joining the Admin Council. Note: all major issues needing a community response need to be put to a vote, not merely discussed. Use polls whenever they're appropriate.
One vital feature of this focus on the community is that the members have it within their rights to even override the Admin Council. Doing this requires at least 50% of the community to vote on an issue and achieve a clear majority (more than two thirds).
In addition to such heady procedural stuff, Community Discussion topics can be used to propose roleplay ideas, lore, and expand the world of Slayers beyond what's already known. Everyone has a voice, and the Community Discussion section is the place to make yours heard!
[/li][li][Rule #4: Respect]
This is one rule that has to be, yet the staff will not be hardline on it unless FORCED to. What we ask is to ATTEMPT to be respectful to other members, and to only troll playfully.
If there's someone who absolutely gets under your skin and drives you insane -- despite your best attempts to be reasonable -- let the staff and/or council know. Disagreements, if they can't be kept civil, should at LEAST not cross the line into flaming, flame-baiting, and other incendiary behaviors. Cleaning up all that ash is a real pain, trust me.
[/li][li][Rule #5: RP Breaking]
You can consider this the cardinal rule of Set Me Free, and the ONE THING that the Admin Council will come down on like a thunderbolt if it ever happens. RP Breaking, for all intents and purposes, is a failure to abide by the basic RP conventions of the forum.
Set Me Free offers its members broad freedom to pursue and enjoy whatever their interests may be, but certain basic concessions are expected of all members. Don't make characters that you know are above your member rank or violate common sense. If a senior, veteran, or staff member points out a problem with something you've posted, don't be belligerent or demanding with them (or regular members too, for that matter). Always show respect for other people's characters, even when your character(s) don't respect theirs. Basically, all we ask is common sense.
Any attempts to blatantly "break" an RP thread and ruin it for those participating will be met with swift, harsh consequences. Members are encouraged to report such behavior to the Admin Council immediately.
CBOX RULES
We have a Cbox ("chat box") for public use, both for members and guests. It can be loads of fun and lead to some really wacky, unexpected moments... but it can't be a free-for-all. These rules specifically govern Cbox use and behavior.
[/li][li] No Advertising. The 'C' in Cbox doesn't stand for "see this link I posted?". If it's part of conversation then linking to images / videos / products / services / other forums is fine, but if it's clear that someone is using the box just to spread links that's really not okay. Even if it's not "advertising". Even if it's Slayers / RP related. Even if it's really, really cool. We'll probably forgive you, true, but keep it on the level.
[/li][li] No Spamming. See above plus text. No, really, that's all it comes down to. If it's part of the conversation -- if everyone (or most everyone) is cool with it -- it's all good. If it's disruptive or causes a lot of needless arguing, Not. Cool.
[/li][li] No Pestering (except Nas). There's this thing about the staff. We love you guys, we really do. We love that you're here to roleplay and express yourself and have a good time. And that's not just talk. But sometimes we staff people get busy and things don't get done in the speedy clockwork fashion that all of us would prefer; put simply, life happens. And when it does it can be stressful to have people asking about character approvals, or AP purchases, or RP posts, etc. So please, give the staff a week's head start before you ask what the status of something is, and then preferably in a PM.
The sole exception, however, is Nascent. He's a lazy SOB and needs people to kick his arse into gear on a regular basis. No, REALLY. If Nas ever drops the ball feel free to toss it back at him; he might catch it with his face, but he WILL catch it! [This message approved by Nascent and paid for by... nobody, really.]
[/li][li] No Racism, Pornographic or Illegal Content. ProBoards doesn't like these things, and we'd rather not be shut down. Similarly, dredging up any of these tends to create trouble in the Cbox, so pleeeeease refrain, especially from the porn and illegalities.
[/li][li] No Bullying. See ALL of the above plus hate. No one likes a bully. Especially the Admin Council. So don't be a bully. And remember kids: only you can preventforest fires flame wars.
[/li][li] Be Yourself. Don't pretend to be Nas if you're not Nas. For one, people will pester you (HA! See what we did there? xP). For two, when Nas finds out he will be very, very disappoint. Same goes for anyone with a staff or council position -- for any member, really.
[/li][li]Conduct. Okay... we really don't wanna have to do this... but here goes.
The Cbox is not a soap box. Or a courtroom. Or a megaphone. When you're on, be mindful that it's (usually) not just you and whoever you're talking to; the entire community -- in fact, the whole Internet (to some extent) can see what you're writing. It's very public. And like any public space, there are good and bad ways to use it. Sure, it's a lot more cozy and agreeable than, say, a bench in the park or your local shopping center, but a certain level of decorum is still reasonable and expected. If you and someone else are having a discussion that becomes a debate or, worse, a shouting match, we would expect you to take it somewhere more private (AIM? Skype? PMs?) so that it doesn't overwhelm the normal community use of the Cbox. We respect your right to have -- and defend -- strong opinions and beliefs, but there is a time and a place. And staff action can be taken if people fail to abide by this rule in particular. We don't wanna be Rule Nazis -- first and foremost, the community is the heart and life of Set Me Free -- but as a pointy-eared freak once said "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few".
[/li][li] Have Fun! The Cbox is meant to be fun. As long as everyone's having fun, everything's good. If the fun goes away, that's not good. This rule is the core and spirit of all the Cbox rules, so please DON'T FORGET IT.
